Building a new trail in Malibu Creek State Park on Earth Day, April 22 2017.

A trail crew leader for the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council, Jerry, points out one of the CORBA trail crew leaders. The trail we'll be building will cross the hillside behind Jerry and wind down to High Road below.

The CORBA crew was working at the end of the trail. It ends where a bridge will be installed to cross an intermittent stream. The remainder of the trail has yet to be roughed in.

The crew above us is working on a section that has been roughed in with the SWECO, a small bulldozer made for trail work.

The trail will abruptly change direction here.

Our section of the trail crossed ground that wasn't very steep, so the way had been cleared with weed whips. Our job was to scrape out some of the remaining vegetation and smooth out any major bumps.

It took a huge amount of work to chop out this stump. It didn't help that the pickmattock tool was really dull!

When all the roots except one were finally cut, we twisted and twisted...

...Finally the last root gave way!
